"Carrie" (1976) is one of my top five films of all time. It's theater. It's camp. It's a deep awakening felt painfully, powerfully, and mystically by its viewers.
In the realm of popular culture, it is mohter to dark portraits of femininity across genres: The Craft, Mean Girls, Stranger Things, Midsommar- all take a page, or even a chapter from her story.
There is no doubt for me that the movie is truly terrifying and tragic. and I feel those parts of it when I watch it, but I think it simultaneously illuminates how absurd it is to be a person. I hope this cartoonish, demented design helps you feel closer to Carrie and the silliness that exists in all tragedies.
